This is a summary of how our school delivers music education to all our pupils across three areas – curriculum music, co-curricular provision and musical experiences – and what changes we are planning in future years. This information is to help pupils and parents or carers understand what our school offers and who we work with to support our pupils’ music education.

Part A: Curriculum music

This is about what we teach in lesson time, how much time is spent teaching music and any music qualifications or awards that pupils can achieve.

At Killinghall Primary School we have timetabled music lessons in all year groups including from Reception to year 6, we have commissioned the services of a specialized music teacher who delivers singing lessons to the whole school which also includes our 2 and 3 year olds. We hold a whole school singing assembly weekly. We use the Charanga music scheme for teaching music which is aligned to the National curriculum for music, and we also have developed our own music intent. We have also developed a progression document which includes a wide range of genres and named composers to ensure the teaching of music is progressive throughout school. A music audit is completed annually by Bradford Music and Arts Service. We work with the music and arts service to ensure our teachers are well equipped to teach musical elements and guide all our students in appreciating music. Through the music audit it is clear that our children enjoy music and are becoming increasingly confident in using music vocabulary. Progress is evident through our online journals (Seesaw) observations and pupil voice. As an inclusive school our children with significant and complex needs are taught a bespoke curriculum to meet their needs as part of their curriculum, music and singing is taught to meet their needs. At Killinghall we have a 2 range of tuned and untuned instruments and also body percussion to support our music curriculum. In Year 3 our children are taught to play the Ukulele, in year 4 the children learn to play glockenspiel, year 5 children learn to play the recorder.

Part B: Co-curricular music

This is about opportunities for pupils to sing and play music, outside of lesson time, including choirs, ensembles and bands, and how pupils can make progress in music beyond the core curriculum.

At Killinghall Primary School we provide many opportunities for children to develop their music skills in addition to their music lessons. We have weekly singing assemblies with a wide range of songs learnt and performed. We provide music tuition through our local music hub, including instruments such as guitars and ukuleles. Key stage 1 performs a Christmas production which involves singing and use of musical instruments, lower key stage 2 perform a Spring concert which again involves singing and playing musical instruments and upper key stage 2 perform an end of year production which showcases music skills. These productions are performed annually in front of parents and peers. An annual Killinghall’s got talent each Spring where every child has the opportunity to enter and showcase their talents. Students are encouraged to join ensembles outside of school, primarily through the Bradford music Hub. KPS has a long-standing tradition of participating in the Young Voices choir, involving Year 5 Students. Throughout the year, our students enjoy participating in music performances, and singing in class assemblies and productions which are performed for parents and peers.

Part C: Musical experiences

This is about all the other musical events and opportunities that we organise, such as singing in assembly, concerts and shows, and trips to professional concerts.

Parents and carers fully support our annual productions, and they are always well attended. Music is played and enjoyed throughout the week to promote relaxation, music is appreciated through assemblies with a diverse range of songs, we promote cross curricular links wherever possible to consolidate learning. At KPS, we embrace our strong connections with the music service to encourage young instrumentalists to progress to performing in ensembles, including opportunities to play and sing with the Halle. We have established a robust partnership with the Music and Arts service, where musicians have collaborated with our students and performed live at our school. Additionally, they have provided opportunities for KPS families to attend Music and Arts service performances outside of school. We have also developed a valuable link with the local community organization 'Women Zone.' Musicians from this group are working with our students to create and appreciate Sufi music and poetry. This collaboration will 3 culminate in a performance that combines Sufi music and poetry, presented to their peers and the local community.

In the future

This is about what the school is planning for subsequent years.

In the subsequent years to come, we are planning to build on our music progress by re-evaluating the current curriculum to upskill in-line with the model music curriculum. We will continue to establish our school choir and give Year 3 an opportunity to showcase their ukulele skills to perform to an audience on an annual basis. Providing opportunities for our children with significant SEND to learn to play an instrument. We would love to provide our children with more opportunities to watch live music performances and develop a strong pupil voice. Furthermore, we will continue to provide our staff with CPD to continue to develop their confidence and subject knowledge.
